Cambridge and Chesnut High Schools are alternative education programs within Coalinga-Huron Unified School District that provide flexible, student-centered learning environments where every student is supported in reaching their goals. Through small class sizes, strong relationships, rigorous instruction, credit-recovery opportunities, and targeted academic and social-emotional support, we help students build confidence, responsibility, and the skills needed for graduation and life beyond high school. Guided by our RISE values—Respect, Improve, Succeed, and Engage—we maintain high expectations while recognizing that every student’s path is unique. Both schools earned WASC accreditation during the 2025/2026 school year, reflecting our commitment to continuous improvement and providing students with a meaningful, high-quality educational experience.

Independent Study

The CHUSD Independent Study Program provides a flexible, student-centered educational option for students in grades 9–12 whose needs may be best supported outside the traditional classroom setting. Students complete standards-aligned coursework with the guidance of a credentialed teacher through regular meetings, ongoing communication, and personalized academic support. The program encourages students to develop independence, responsibility, time-management skills, and consistent learning habits while remaining connected to district resources and services. Students and families work in partnership with school staff to meet attendance, engagement, and academic expectations and ensure steady progress toward educational goals.

CHUSD Adult Transition Program

The CHUSD Adult Transition Program supports young adults with disabilities, post K-12, ages 18-22, as they prepare for greater independence, employment, and life beyond high school. The program offers a diploma track for students working toward completing graduation requirements, as well as independent living skills focus tailored to each student's individual needs and goals. Through classroom instruction, hands-on learning, and community-based experiences, students strengthen skills in academics, employment readiness, communication, self-advocacy, daily living, and community participation. Our goal is to help every student build confidence and successfully transition into a productive and fulfilling adult life.

Culwell Community Day School provides a small, structured, and supportive learning environment for students who benefit from additional academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support in grades 7-12. Through individualized instruction, strong relationships, clear expectations, and targeted interventions, students work toward improving attendance, behavior, academic progress, and decision-making skills. Our goal is to help every student rebuild confidence, experience success, and develop the skills necessary to transition successfully to a comprehensive school setting, graduate, and prepare for life beyond high school.
